COAS Observatory

Located on the roof of the new College of Arts and Sciences building, this observatory houses a 1 meter Ritchey-Chrétien telescope built by DFM Engineering. This telescope is the largest university-owned research telescope in the state and possibly the largest optical telescope in the southeast.
Seeing is believing. 120,000 pounds of steel support this telescope five stories off of the ground. The 560 pound, 1 meter diameter primary mirror collects so much light that looking at the moon without special filters will hurt your eyes.
Our state-of-the-art control room provides real-time images from the four refractor telescopes attached to the primary scope.
